Racers and fans,
Recently we talked about the presentation from Dr. William Ebben at a major trainer's conference in Las Vegas. I wanted to talk about it again today with the help of our resident up and coming Auto Racer's Trainer Tyler Benson. This is Tyler's 5th appearance in the Auto Racers Fitness Magazine. One more, and we might have to get him a fancy office. But that's ok, he's worth it.
I am highlighting Dr. Ebben again because to me he is on the cutting edge of the science that says that Racing is tough on the body, (no different then some of the field or court sports) and that we must train specifically for racing to achieve peak performance. I believe his work further legitimizes where we are heading as a sport and also the work I have done with projects like The Racers Workout. Here's Tyler:
This was one of the more interesting researches I have read.
Right of the bat the research done on stock car racing and the amount of physical strain it puts on the body was very interesting. I know a lot of the time I've talked to trainers that respond very quickly to me saying racing is a very demanding sport by saying, how hard is it to drive in circles. As well as it's tough for researchers to understand to strain and toughness it takes without being behind the wheel. You take a 200 lb guy or girl. Put them in a race car that's over 130 degrees on some occasions and have then race consistently from anywhere up to 500 miles. One thing I've always stuck with is hop in your car on a hot summer day. Put jeans, a coat on and a helmet, then toasty toes in your shoes and gloves on your hands, oh and just to experience the tension wrap a 10 lbs weight on your forearm, now drive down the highway during rush our. Now tell me how easy it is.
The workouts that they incorporated are very affective! I've done a few of them and noticed the difference. Many times you forget on how much your body relies on the core center of the body and these workouts are just the trick. Another positive is the progress made chart towards the end. If you show this article to other clients you can show them the progress and time taken to get the full effect of the workouts which could be a good standard for future reference.

I am thinking of calling this "The Daytona Project". (It is my magazine, so I have license to say things that some might consider sort of dorky.)

***If anyone would like a copy of the article in PDF, email me at Russbohaty@gmail.com. My recommendation is to add some of Dr. Ebben's suggested exercises to your workout, maybe 1 per workout. I endorse his methods wholeheartedly.
