sometimes being a couch potato is just good rest. You can still build racing endurance from home without fancy equipment too.

Racers and Fans,

I am back at work doing original articles after a great experience on the road meeting fans and talking racing and racing fitness. If you remember back in the early days of this magazine, I talked about how getting proper rest is crucial to maximizing the benefits of your workout program.

There will be times that you can't make it to the gym or you can't get fancy cumbersome equipment out, or you are missing a workout to watch a game or race on the tube.   It will happen and it's ok. We can get the benefits of focused movement right from our living room. That was the idea behind the Couch Potato's Workout. Couch Potato is about moving and creating a habit of activity in our lives even while we are not doing a formal gym workout. It is a critical and important component included in The Racers Workout  package.

Today I am going to share with you one of my favorites from Couch Potato Workout. The key with these exercises is to incorporate them into the commercials while you are watching your programs and to keep notes about your progress so you can  try to make incremental improvement over time.

This is what I call the Bicycle. It is great for your hip plexors, abs and core muscles (including the low back which is often a problem area) and really gets the heart rate up.

Bicycles: get on your back, lift your legs and pump your legs back and forth like you
are on a horizontal bicycle. Start out at 20 repetitions and try to work your way up over
time. Keep your hands on the arms of the couch to help you balance. Lay yourself
across your couch for maximum comfort! Make sure to breath normally!
Play with speed. Do some slow and do some fast. Slower requires more use of the core muscles.
