Auto Racers Fitness Magazine Gets a Grip on the Progress of Joey Saldana

Joey Saldana continues on the mend from his serious accident at Eldora in July. Upside is he'll be able to spend more time with family.
World of Outlaws standout and Kasey Kahne Racing team member Joey Saldana is recovering well from a serious crash he sustained at Eldora in Ohio a few weeks back. His wife Shannon has been great about providing updates to everyone. He has begun his rehab. He suffered numerous broken ribs and those are in various states in the healing process. The injury that will likely keep him sidelined for quite some time is the broken right forearm which required surgery. Shannon related on twitter that Joey will be going to the doctor this Tuesday the 30th for further examination of the arm injury.
Joey lives in the Indianapolis area and Shannon previously announced he will be doing work with Pit Fit also based in the city. Great choice. They know their stuff and have state of the art facilities. Besides the comfort of being at home and able to watch his favorite teams, which is rare for any racer this time of year.
Now let's hope he has something worth watching at Lucas Oil Stadium. I get the feeling that without this guy, the Colts' fortunes stand to change radically:

One of my favorite grip strengthening ideas for drivers
This baby gets the hands in every fiber and the forearms. My thanks to the folks over at Great Strength Training for laying it this way.
Plier Lifting
This is a similar grip exercise for creating a tight, static crushing grip. Again - deceptively cheap and simple, but boy will it work your forearms.
For this one you'll need:3
◆ Pliers
◆ A Bucket (5 gallon or similar)
◆ Weight (sand, dirt, lead shot, water, bricks, rocks, etc.)
◆ A Short Strip of Leather
Take the bucket and put some weight in it. Then wrap the strip of leather just around the bucket's handle and grab the two ends of the leather with the head of the pliers.
Then, with a thumb upward grip, simply lift up the bucket while holding the pliers tightly pressed together. If you don't keep the pliers tight, the leather strip will loosen and bucket will fall - so keep it tight!
Once you've lifted the bucket, try doing some hammer curls with it.4 This will place a great strain on your grip and forearm, especially your lower forearm.
As you get more advanced, get another strip of leathern and pair of pliers. Then, wrap the two strips around a regular barbell and do hammer curls or deadlifts with both hands.5 Or just do two buckets at the same time.
One Caveat: Make sure the leather is strong. You can substitute canvas or some other cloth for it if necessary, but make sure it can take the strain without breaking.
Do this on your arm days for Racers Workout at the end of your workout.
